Member Spotlight: Emily Principe

Emily has volunteered herself to be the President of an organization at Western Michigan University (WMU) called Women in STEM (WiSTEM).

“I am proud to say that I have grown the organization from 6 members to 20 WiSTEM members at WMU. This is a huge accomplishment considering that I’m also juggling being a full-time student at WMU.”

In WiSTEM, Emily has organized STEM events for students at WMU. Some of these events included organizing and hosting a networking event that allows STEM professionals to come to weekly WiSTEM meetings as guest speakers to share their wisdom with the young WMU students. The professionals discussed their experience in STEM as a woman and they also discussed how to excel in life whether students are a math major or an engineer. Aside from these networking events, Emily has put together fun social events that allow the WiSTEM group to feel more connected with each other.

“One event that comes to mind is attending the Abrams Planetarium in Lansing, Michigan. Not only was this an event that I collaborated with the Physics Club at WMU, but it was also an event that educated students on astronomy and space science.”

Emily states “In conclusion, my tenure as the President of WiSTEM at WMU has been a rewarding journey of growth and accomplishment. Taking the organization from 6 to 20 members, all while balancing the responsibilities of a full-time student studying chemical engineering, is a significant achievement that reflects my commitment to fostering a supportive community for women in STEM fields. Through the implementation of diverse activities, including engaging STEM-related networking events and enjoyable social events, I aim to create a well-rounded experience for WiSTEM members.”
